After a 30-year career in quality management for small and large manufacturers, Shari Morin was ready for the next chapter in her life. With her husband’s encouragement, Morin decided to hire herself, blending sole-proprietorship with her passion for the arts in a new custom framing company. In the fall of 2016, Morin discovered the Women’s Business Center of New York…
While the barriers to entry for a retail shop can be very high, one way to keep costs down and limit your time investment while you keep your full-time job, is to set up a weekend popup shop as a side business idea. More of whatever it is you’re selling—donuts, clothing, antique baseball cards, or anything else—will stay in your pockets instead of going to pay for operating expenses such as rent or utilities by choosing to pursue retail as a side business idea with a short-term rental. This guide from Shopify will give you a step-by-step process for getting your popup shop off the ground.
It is not unusual for New Yorkers to run businesses out of their home kitchens, but before you put on your chef’s hat, you’ll need to ensure that your at-home food preparation business meets local guidelines. If you are proposing to bake cookies, bread, double-crust fruit pies, or cakes, you’re in business. If you want to turn out cheesecakes, you’re out of luck (cheesecakes don’t comply). Likewise, candy is generally fine but not chocolate candy. Similarly, while strawberry jam does comply with local standards, pickles and salsa do not. In fact, if your dream business involves anything that requires refrigeration, including cheese, yogurt, dairy products, meat, poultry, fish, and even cooked or canned veggies, you’ll need to rethink your business plan.
If you don’t mind parading yourself around in public places as a side business idea, and enjoy a little attention, then working as a human billboard can pay a surprising amount of dividends. Renting out your beard, for example can earn you as much as $5 a day while having a brand logo tattooed on your shaven head for five years could pay as much as $7,000—though this type of earning opportunity is admittedly rare. This business idea is definitely not for the faint of heart, and is a little extreme for me, but nonetheless it's been done as a side hustle for many people. You can start by holding a placard or wearing a sandwich board. If you think this is a good side business idea, you can go all the way and turn it into a full on small business idea with enough hard work—plus you won't have to deal with all the issues other more complex businesses have to constantly think about (like reducing churn).

No one likes doing taxes, and they need to be paid whether the economy is booming or tanking. This is why at-home tax preparation can be a great business for anyone with a tax background, or anyone willing to take training courses. Since there are annual changes to the tax code, you will need to refresh your training each year, and you will also need to register with the IRS as a tax preparer. This is more of a seasonal business than a year-round endeavor, but it can be a great way to earn some extra income each winter/spring. Median salary: $30,900.

Mechanical Turk operates much like TaskRabbit and GigWalk: it’s a corner online where Amazon gathers tasks to be done, people willing to do them, and people willing to pay for them. On Mechanical Turk, you get to do the oddest jobs you can imagine as an online business idea, made possible by a parallel online universe that runs on hits, visits, surveys, reviews, pins, likes, CPCs, reads, and other metrics. But don’t get too ambitious. The small sums being paid out to human Mechanical Turk users rarely add up to anything seriously substantial, even if you invest most of your spare time into it. It's a better opportunity for internationally-based people with internet access and lower costs of living than in the US. Here’s one person’s account of his former life as a Mechanical Turk talking through how he got started with this business idea and what the experience was really like.

Traveling Vineyard for life!” – Elizabeth Allen, Emerald Director

There's also (of course) now an app for this side business idea. It's called Bellhops, and you can quickly sign up to start working as a mover almost right away (after going through their application process). The best part about using Bellhops is that they already have customers booked and ready to schedule their moves, meaning you can pretty much get a steady stream of moving jobs depending upon your location, just by signing up and setting the hours that you're available.
Of course, successful writers need to have a firm grasp on grammar and tone, superb editing chops, and the ability to do their own research and synthesize content that they might be unfamiliar with. It could help if you become an expert in a few different fields, like technology or small business finance, and it’s always important for all freelancers to know how to market themselves and network with potential customers.
There are many directions you can take this business. If you want to work during hours when no one else does, you can focus on office clients. You can focus on retail businesses and keep your customers clumped into one or two blocks. Restaurants are in great need of daily thorough cleaning and can be a great source of steady clients. Perhaps you would be more interested in house cleaning. Many times with cleaning services you don't have to spend lots of money on advertising or marketing because your customers will come by word of mouth.

Doulas guide expectant mothers through all the non-medical aspects of the labor and delivery process, operating either in a home setting, at a hospital, or both. And because doulas primarily travel to their clients to perform their work, you won’t need to splurge on office space. Of course, you’ll need to go through training and earn certification to work as a professional doula. But if you’re passionate about women’s health and wellness, inspired by the prospect of bringing new life into the world, and don’t want to work a regular 9-5, that training will be worth it.
That is millions and millions of potential clicks lost just because websites have not hired an SEO expert. Most webmasters know this, and some try to carry out SEO on their own. But to be honest, the kind of patience and technicalities involved with proper search engine optimization is either beyond most people or requires too much work and time. That’s where you come in.
Many small companies and startups now outsource jobs that aren’t part of their core business (such as HR, admin, and accounting), which makes this skill set a great opportunity for starting a side business idea that engages your number prowess. Because companies always need to track their cash flow, freelance accountants and bookkeepers can really benefit from the increasing demand for part-time help.
Gift shopping and building remain a position at some companies to this day. A lot of people need to put together gifts baskets and bags for events or as thank yous for clients and donors. This work requires a lot of creativity and inspiration. Fun and festive packaging sells a lot of the contents and having time to research recipients to tailor offerings to their tastes are a bonus.
The really cool thing about outsourcing these virtual jobs to say the Philippines or India is that you can spend your time during the day meeting up with clients and by the evening, you can send out your assignments to your virtual team. Because of the time differences, they can work on those assignments overnight, so you’re able to get twice as much work done with this online business model.
It's a little more involved. Companies, especially those with stores, will want to get the opinion of the customer as they go through a transaction. For a bank, it might be opening up an account. For a retail clothing store, it might be trying on a shirt and checking out. Sometimes it's just calling up their customer service line with a problem and seeing how the representative treats you.
Whether you’re looking for a full-time job, a part-time opportunity, or a chance to earn a little extra to help make ends meet, one of the best options for women is finding a “mom job.” Regardless of your motivations, the first step toward getting a stay-at-home mom job is exploring what’s available. It can be an intimidating prospect, but once you know what’s out there, you can figure out what’s best for you.
This list is great, thanks! I wanted to point out, though, that it looks like at least some of the transcription jobs are listed as paying per audio hour which would work out to a lot less per hour of work. One hour of audio can take 3 to 4 hours for an experienced transcriber to complete, so $24/audio hour=$6-8/hour. Just something for people to be aware of.
Some of the companies on this list are those you’ll recognize. Dell, still one of the largest PC vendors in the world, regularly hires project managers, business analysts and systems engineers for remote work. Salesforce, which came in at #3 on Forbes’ list of the world’s most innovative companies this year, hires telecommuting account executives, product designers and even upper management positions like regional vice presidents. Xerox, Adobe, SAP and American Express also make the list with their own distinct sets of work from home and remote work agreements.
Being a food delivery driver is back in style! People all over the country are signing up to do it. Two companies are dominating the space: DoorDash and UberEats. How it works is easy: When a person places a food delivery order from a local restaurant, the restaurant notifies DoorDash or UberEats (whichever one they use) that they need a driver to pick up and deliver the food to the customer. As the driver, you get a notification that a delivery is waiting and you can choose to go pick up and deliver the food (specific instructions on where to go, etc. included). DoorDash pays a minimum of $10/hour but says drivers can earn $25/hour on average. I've read from various sources that UberEats drivers make between $10-$12/hour after accounting for expenses. I recommend looking into it yourself. Click here to read about DoorDash, or here to read up on UberEats.
Social media managers are a relatively new occupation that has experienced incredible growth over the last part of the decade. The immense post-millennial population that exists today in our country were essentially raised on social media. Keywords such as Myspace, Facebook, and Yahoo readily became part of a child’s lexicon at exceedingly early ages.
I really appreciate all the hard work you put into this list. I never knew there were so many options. I have worked my entire life and am currently a undergrad in Business MGMT/Healthcare. In 2014, my 20 yr old son became a quadriplegic. For the first time, in many years, I am a stay at home mom. At 38, I have spent too many years being independent to feel comfortable relying on my husband. You have given me hope and a starting point. Thank you

So happy to see Jam Maker on this list. I recently started my own business making and selling unique jams and jellies online. I never knew I was trendy. Many good ideas on here. I’ve only just started to make the break from traditional work force, but believe it is the best decision I’ve made in a long time – though I still haven’t fully quit my day job.
Do you love woodworking? Even without a huge workshop, you can create some of the more popular crafts and sell them. And like most things, your success in business isn’t necessarily related to how skilled you are as a woodworker. So if you can figure out which products consumers want and just create those, you could have a good business plan. Etsy.com and farmers’ markets are a great place to start selling.
Graphic designers have many business opportunities that cater to their skill set. You can work as a freelance graphic designer or illustrator. Like starting a home bakery, developing a catering service comes with a unique set of food-oriented challenges. Right off the bat, you need to make sure that it’s legal in your state or municipality to use your home kitchen for commercial food production. If it is, you’ll still need to make sure that you’re following food-safety regulations and other relevant laws.
On the other hand, people who are introverted, and prefer a minimal level of interaction with others would probably enjoy data entry. The solid sense of meeting your self-set goals—whether task-based or financially-oriented—can be enough to fill someone with pride. And finding an organization that is rich in rewards and recognition will benefit anyone hoping for a sense of accomplishment. The key to a successful home business is choosing one that brings fulfillment.
As the economy bounces back, more Americans have a little extra disposable income—and since we’re all busier than ever, the market is ripe with opportunity for professional house cleaners. If you’re willing to get your hands dirty, you can keep your business small and strike out on your own. Or, if you have dreams of a larger enterprise, hire a few employees or contractors and you can manage several cleaning teams. Overhead might include equipment, marketing costs, and wages for personnel, but otherwise starting a cleaning service is a relatively low-cost enterprise.
