One of the easiest ways to incorporate motherhood into making money is by offering childcare. Not only can you care for your own children, but for other children as well. While you don't necessarily need to be licensed, getting a license can increase your appeal to parents, which, in turn, can lead to your charging more. Further, some states have food programs whereby you can get additional funds to help feed the children in your care.
Although there may be good reasons to use another form of business organization, there are also advantages to “going it alone" with a sole proprietorship. Mainly for the purpose of protecting personal assets from business obligations or potential lawsuits, many experts advise the formation of an LLC or a corporation. However, for various reasons, many business owners opt to run their business as a sole proprietorship. Sole proprietorship advantages include:
A 2007 Pew Research Center survey shows that more at-home moms today (48 percent) consider being home full time the ideal situation than they did 10 years ago (39 percent). Inversely, just 21 percent of working moms say working full time is ideal, down from 32 percent in 1997. "In my research, there seems to be a backlash among the millennial generation; in a sense, they're modeling themselves after their grandmothers, not their mothers," says Susan Shapiro Barash, a women's issues expert and author of You're Grounded Forever…But First, Let's Go Shopping: The Challenges Mothers Face With Their Daughters and Ten Timely Solutions. Many of these young women look at their baby boomer moms and question why they'd want to be them. Some of those moms struggled in their marriages and had a tough time balancing work and family, she says. That doesn't mean today's SAHM has abandoned her career aspirations or traded her BlackBerry for an ironing board, just that she's more concerned about living a balanced life than proving she's Superwoman.
I find that a lot of people want a turn-key business – one that doesn’t require a lot of capital to start and maintain. Unfortunately, the majority of the businesses listed here either require significant start-up costs because in a lot of them you need liability insurance, licenses, money to buy the inventory to start the business, and or a physical location in order to operate.

Don’t worry, even if you are camera shy you can still make money from hosting videos on YouTube. Video is quickly becoming an integral part of online interaction and content dissemination. From trends like Facebook Live to Instagram Videos and Snapchat Stories, using video is extremely easy and very likely to earn you an audience – provided you give them what they want.

If you love to write and illustrate and can’t keep good stories out of your head, you may want to give writing a children’s book a try. Luckily, with the iPad and Kindle, it’s easier than ever to get your story out to the masses. You can test your story ideas out with ebook apps on these devices. If one gets extremely popular, you can publish it afterwards.
A doula is a labor coach that can help a birthing mother in any labor environment, from a hospital to a midwife clinic to home. Doulas are non-medical professionals who offer information, emotional support, and physical assistance in the process of giving birth. While licensing for doulas is not required by most states, getting certified by DONA International, the only certifying body for this profession, is a good idea. Doulas do have to deal with unpredictable schedules, but they easily can do this work from home. Doulas generally charge between $500 and $1000 per birth.
While writing a book might not be everyone’s cup of tea, there are guides and lots of advice online that can help you get started. In fact, you don’t even have to write the book yourself. You can simply hire a ghostwriter to do it for you! It is actually not the writing itself that is the problem (although you have to provide people with something that they would enjoy reading and gain from in general) but in the promotion of the book. It is the marketing aspect of it that often gets most self-publishers out of the money.

People need your help and they will pay you for it. Seriously. The “gigs” section of Craigslist.com is a classic place to find jobs, as is the bulletin board at your local church. We wrote a post on all the places to find work. Traditional job search sites can be over saturated with applicants but non-traditional places, as mentioned, can provide you a means for earning some extra income. You just have to be a go-getter and get hungry to find them. You could consider driving for Doordash or downloading the TaskRabbit app which has a plethora of ideas. Click here to get $20 credit when hiring from TaskRabbit.
Amazon is a great way to unload used books. But, you can also sell a variety of other items on Amazon as well. You could opt to start an Amazon FBA. You could source products on Aliexpress and drop-ship them from Amazon. That gives you a near-hands-free method of running an ecommerce business without much of the hassles of personally dealing with returns and customer service.
Wellbox provides care management services to practices and physicians, including Annual Wellness Visits, Telemedicine, and Chronic Care Management. They frequently hire Registered Nurses to work in a variety of roles, including Telehealth, Case Managers, and Coordinators. Wellbox offers both part-time and full-time employment and frequently allows employees to set their own schedules.

There’s no need to be an artist, just an expert in some form of art. Visit galleries. Get on their email lists, and go to their parties. Get to know their clients. Gallery owners will love you, even recommend your services, because you’ll be telling people to buy art from them. You don’t have to own any inventory. It’s pure consulting. There is almost no overhead cost for a business like this. It’s really about having a passion for art and a knack for earning people’s trust. And it’s fun!
There are 10.1 million women-owned businesses in the United States, says the Center for Women's Business Research. No firm statistics exist on how many are run by stay-at-home moms, but it stands to reason that the percentage is increasing in the Wi-Fi age. "Over 90 percent of the moms we've interviewed said the desire for family flexibility is the number-one reason they work from home," says Ellen Parlapiano, co-founder of mompreneursonline.com. "Another big change we've seen in the past 15 years is acceptance. In the past, moms have been reluctant to tell clients they work from home. Now it's commonplace, even respectable." Mom-owned businesses, which used to be heavy on arts and crafts, now run the professional gamut, says Parlapiano: Web design, attorney, marketing guru, social media coaching, you name it.
Helping online businesses use paid campaigns to establish a Facebook presence is a fantastic way to make money online. However, even though the technical side of advertising on Facebook is made easy, it’s not exactly a cakewalk. You need skills to write copy that converts sales, conduct in-depth research on audience profiles, find the best times to promote, keep a close eye on result metrics and glean the proper insights. Of course, you also must have exceptional client communication.

Great post. My husband has been selling used books on-line for 10 years…It’s not enough to fully support our family of 6, but it does afford us a lot of flexibility. We both work other odds and ends spot jobs and it ends up working out. We have also had the flexibility to be volunteer managers at a church camp in the summer. (Right now the camp can not afford a manager) I’m pioneering a women’s conference and event ministry. I’ve always been very greatful for the freedom we have. My husband helps at the kids schools, apointments are easy to make, and the stress is less. It’s been a sacrifice in some ways but worth the gains in time and flexibility for sure.
I've discovered a way you could earn an extra $2,700 per year with Swagbucks, just by watching videos online. The catch? The videos have ads. You can earn rewards (Swagbucks) for things you are already doing. Reward sites can be hit or miss, with many feeling like scams. Don’t worry — Swagbucks is legitimate and if you’re willing to put in some time, you can earn Amazon gift cards, Walmart gift cards and other top retailers. I’ve personally got my eye on this cheap drone on Amazon that’s under $50, I should be able to get it just by doing another week of Swagbucks grindin’.

I’m in a difficult position because I’m currently unable to walk or stand for more than a few minutes at a time (or even less) due to a weird issue with flat feet and also I have carpel tunnel in my wrists. Which means an at home job where I can sit is absolutely necessary, but the amount of typing I can do at one time is also limited. There might be work-arounds to the wrist-stuff with speech to text programs and the like, but the sitting thing is non-negotiable. I am trying to solve my problems related to disability, but in the meantime if I can find some source of income, that would be wonderful.
Administrative Assistant – Seagate Technology is hiring an Administrative Assistant to prepare agendas and correspondence for staff and business meetings and maintain records and files of current and post projects, operations and decisions. Work with spreadsheet, database, presentation and word processing software packages in the preparation of requested documents.
Matt Landau is not your typical 29-year-old. In 2005, after graduating from the University of Richmond, Landau, the New Jersey native packed his bags and moved to Panama City, Panama. While working on developing his travel and investing site, The Panama Report, Landau developed a friendship with the owners of Los Cuatro Tulipanes, a boutique hotel in downtown Casco Viejo, Panama. And when the owners of the hotel expressed interest in selling, Landau jumped at the opportunity to buy. The hotel now has eight full-time employees, while The Panama Report has four. Landau, a serial entrepreneur at heart, also runs Boost Occupancy, a hotel consulting service. "I do have an office [at the hotel,] but I tend to be much more productive in the privacy and quiet of my own home which overlooks the Pacific," Landau says. "With the cost of labor low in Panama, things like live-in maids, messengers, and cooks makes working at home like working in a very well-appointed executive compound."
Using your skills for profit is a common trend with all of the best side business ideas. If you're an expert at something, there's likely an audience of people online who would be willing to pay to become an expert in your field—just like you. If you want to take your skills and turn them into an online course that teaches others how to get the same results you've achieved in your life, career, or business, start with How to Create an Awesome Online Course on Udemy, where instructor Miguel Hernandez covers how he makes over $90,000/yr teaching online. You'll learn from more than 8 hours of video instruction.

If you live near a university, there are likely all sorts of research studies looking for participants. While I was an undergrad at Virginia Tech, I got paid $500 to participate in a 6-week dietary study. The study provided all my meals and paid me, but I had to eat a 5,000 calorie diet of 50% fat for 6 weeks, plus I had multiple muscle biopsies, urine/blood testing, etc.
Once they’re happy with the site you’ve made for them and they know you live up to your promises, it will be easier to sell those additional digital marketing services to them in the future. Maintain an excellent reputation with these people and not only will they become your repeat customers, but they’ll also be more inclined to refer you to their friends and colleagues.

If you want to start a Christmas tree farm, you need to plan ahead. It takes approximately seven years for a Balsam fir--perhaps the most traditional Christmas tree--to grow from a small sapling to a 5- to 6-foot tree. Selling your trees yourself is the best option. Consumers come to the property, pick the one they want, and you harvest it for them. The other option is to buy your trees from a wholesaler and sell them either in your yard or in a vacant lot that you rent from Thanksgiving to Christmas.

When you have a business plan and startup capital in place, select a winning name for your business and register it with your state. Decide what type of business ownership works best for you. Do you want to be a sole proprietor or start a partnership? Should you incorporate? Get any business licenses or permits that are required, and register for taxes if this is necessary in your state. Look into insurance needs. Then start promoting your business.
Another great resource for stay-at-home moms looking to start their own e-business is other “mompreneurs.” Networking with other women who run their own businesses provides you with priceless lessons and tips from the people who have already been where you are now. Other moms know the highs and lows of being a woman in charge of her own enterprise while balancing work and family. The social support is also essential when you run your company from home, as opposed to a more collaborative environment.
If you have authentic information to share and something that’s not just regurgitated information, then you’ll gain people’s respect and confidence. Build a marketing funnel, send some Facebook traffic to a lead capture page, and sell information products. This is all possible when you email market the right way. Once you get people hooked on what you’re selling them, you will begin to see an influx of forever clients or returning customers.
Also, make sure you’re up-to-date on CPR, first aid and other emergency procedures. Then make sure your own kids are OK with sharing their home every day. Once all of that is wrapped up, go to your friends and neighbors, your kids’ teachers, your place of worship and anywhere else busy parents are looking for day-care services, and get your word out.

Why it's cool: Don't be fooled by the entrance to The Last Word. If you can get past the hammers and rakes, you'll find a 1920s-inspired speakeasy. The bar is filled with antique leather couches and huge red velvet curtains. Though there's no sign of the bar's name anywhere on the outside, it's slyly etched into ice cubes and branded on orange peels.
A number of companies have achieved incredible success by allowing people to work with them instead of for them. Just about every industry has its own success story: Cosmetics has Mary Kay and Avon. Jewelry has Silpada and Stella & Dot. There are the well-known kitchen goods companies like Pampered Chef and Tupperware. There’s even a company called Pure Romance that allows people to market and sell items for date night.

HealthyWage offers people the opportunity to earn cash for losing weight. Earn cash for losing weight? Sounds too good to be true, but you read it right. The company was founded in 2009, and it's HQ is in New York, and part of their mission is to provide ways to have a measurable impact of the growing obesity epidemic in the US. They do this by legitimately offering cash prizes to make weight loss and fitness more fun and effective. Since HealthyWage was founded they have been featured in literally hundreds of newspapers, magazines, TV shows, blogs and website.
They are generally solopreneurs who offer their services to small businesses who need help with a given range of tasks. Some people might argue that being a virtual assistant isn't really running a business. But somebody like Gina Horkey can prove that's simply not true, and she has a booming business to back her claims up. She's also seen as the “go to” person for a step-by-step guide to running your own VA business.
As a young self-employed mum of 1, I have struggled with getting some sort of balance. I also at times say no to social events to avoid being tired on the weekends, when I like to enjoy walks and Pilates (and squeezing in a little work here and there)- I have felt guilty about not attending social engagements up until recently when my business really started to kick off, now I know I am making all the right decisions and doing what I love, all the time!
Plug "mom bloggers" into a search engine and you'll come up with thousands of SAHMs who chronicle their daily lives online. Moms share stories and tips about single parenting, adoption, home schooling and more. The most popular blogs, like the Pioneer Woman and Dooce, turned their authors into celebrities who rack up book and movie deals. Jen Singer, the New Jersey mom of two who created mommasaid.net, says her blog averages 90,000 views per month; it's not a huge moneymaker per se, but it has led to book deals, speaking engagements and endorsement offers—none of which would have happened in the pre-Internet era. "Mom bloggers are hugely influential because they represent the authentic voices of other moms," says Jennifer James, founder of mombloggersclub.com, a community that's 10,000 strong. Making a living from a blog is tough, she adds, but there are other perks. "Moms who pen really great blogs are heavily courted by brands to review their product," she says. "Some receive thousands of dollars in products each month."
Gift shopping and building remain a position at some companies to this day. A lot of people need to put together gifts baskets and bags for events or as thank yous for clients and donors. This work requires a lot of creativity and inspiration. Fun and festive packaging sells a lot of the contents and having time to research recipients to tailor offerings to their tastes are a bonus.
Freelance writers can more easily be thought of as a “writer for hire” or someone who is contracted out to write about a particular topic. If you have some writing chops, but don’t want to deal with all the extra work that goes into running a blog, you can hire yourself out and write for newspapers, large online publications and even other bloggers.

Just because you’re at home doesn’t mean you can’t take a real full- or part-time job. VAs are growing in popularity as they are a fantastic way for businesses to save money through outsourcing. You will could be responsible for taking calls, organizing bookings on a calendar or diary, and perhaps responding to emails. You may also take on other PA duties, such as organising travel details or ordering gifts. Freelancers and sole traders are most likely to require your services, and you can stack up several clients to increase your earnings. You can find opportunities on to become a VA on websites like UpWork and PeoplePerHour.
You can work from home almost exclusively. Except for events, you can do your entire direct selling job from the comfort of your home. That means you can spend time with your family to your heart’s desire and then, when you have chances to focus on work, do it from your living room, kitchen table, or office! And events like our wine tastings give you the chance to escape for a couple of hours of adult conversation and fun. It’s a sweet deal!
Other than major electronics such as your computer or cell phone, software will probably be among your greatest initial expenses for essential equipment. While it may be nice to have all the software that you could probably ever need, it's not cost effective, especially as you embark on your WAHM career. Consider what you'll be using your computer for and how often you'll be using those programs. Let's look at...
Know someone who rents out property to others? Perhaps they could use a hand managing their property. If so, you can make a decent amount of money on this side business idea with relatively little work on your part (most of the time). It'll take some hustling and the willingness to be flexible with your schedule, as you'll be responsible for collecting rent checks, managing repairs and improvements, and simply being on call for emergencies. But, a property manager is essential for most real estate investors that have a large enough portfolio, so there's definitely merit to this business idea.
But if you do go the fashion route, be prepared to do quite a bit of networking before you get your business off the ground. Don’t be afraid to do free consultations for contests and giveaways. The more word gets around about your fabulous fashion sense, the larger a clientele you’ll build. If you’re really good, you can start this business with little to no training.
There’s more to being a coach or personal trainer than just being fit and loving to exercise. Finding a specialization is important, and licenses might be required for certain types of coaching roles. For instance, a friend in Boston obtained US and European soccer-coaching licenses before opening a successful one-on-one soccer-instruction business.
Speaking of keeping inventory on hand: Do you have the physical space in your life for whatever you choose to do? If you’re in a studio apartment or drive a tiny hatchback, you don’t have room for a ton of boxes. On the other hand, taking calls as an at-home call center representative means you’d need a quiet space with reliable phone service and fast internet. Home-based crafters need space both to work and to store their creations and supplies. A carpenter and a soapmaker have vastly different requirements for space, materials, and storage.

Ebates ($10 free signup bonus): Shop online through their website at more than 2,000 stores like Sephora, Macy’s, and Apple. Ebates members also special discounts, promo codes, and coupons. You earn cash back with each purchase and will receive it in the form of a check or through PayPal. If it’s already cheaper to shop online, why not make it even cheaper?

You love dogs? You’re good at taking care of them? You want to open a dog-boarding business? Just make sure you’re prepared. Sure, it’s a great opportunity, and it’s totally doable—with some planning. Make sure you know your local zoning laws and, perhaps more importantly, make sure your neighbors would be OK with some extra noise and activity around your place.
If you don’t mind parading yourself around in public places as a side business idea, and enjoy a little attention, then working as a human billboard can pay a surprising amount of dividends. Renting out your beard, for example can earn you as much as $5 a day while having a brand logo tattooed on your shaven head for five years could pay as much as $7,000—though this type of earning opportunity is admittedly rare. This business idea is definitely not for the faint of heart, and is a little extreme for me, but nonetheless it's been done as a side hustle for many people. You can start by holding a placard or wearing a sandwich board. If you think this is a good side business idea, you can go all the way and turn it into a full on small business idea with enough hard work—plus you won't have to deal with all the issues other more complex businesses have to constantly think about (like reducing churn).
For example, iStockPhoto.com, owned by Getty Images, requires you to apply to be a contributor. You can submit Photos, Illustrations, Video and Audio but you will need three samples of your work. If accepted, you'll be paid a 15% commission for each file downloaded and if you agree to be exclusive. If you make iStock your exclusive royalty-free agent, you can earn up to 45% with additional attention.
Your buyer can choose from a variety of items to have the image printed on. Your design could be put on a t-shirt, phone cover, pillow, mug and more; this greatly expands your online marketing options. Additionally, you can get into a print on demand business as the owner, or you can take advantage of this online business opportunity as a design contributor.
A spinoff of the Homeowner Referral Network (HRN) business model, Aging in Place Referrals is a profitable and rewarding home based business! Get paid to pre-screen and refer home improvement contractors to senior homeowners in your community. According to AARP, 92% of senior homeowners want to age-in-place and will need to renovate, modify, and maintain their homes for safety and comfort. But, many seniors and their caregivers struggle to find a contractor they can trust.  An Aging in Place Referral Network fills this need in the home improvement market and is a great way to earn an income from home while helping others! For more information, visit www.aginginplacereferrals.com.
Note:  Nearly all of these programs require an upfront investment for purchasing your initial inventory. They’re not our first choice when it comes to work from home jobs for this reason alone. We don’t like seeing users getting stuck with thousands of dollars in inventory only to realize they’re trying to offload their LuLaRoe into already saturated markets.
And don’t forget social media as a home-based business. Many churches, other non profit charities, and business owners NEED to advertise via social media. You can either be hired to do theirs or become a consultant who trains their staff. Many churches don’t know the Internet laws like an avid social media user does. They’ll need someone to teach them how to use social media and protect their organization while doing it. Ask me how I know. 😉 My husband and I have worked with some organizations who refused to listen and they ended up with some scandals. Take a gander at what happened to Pastor Alios Bell’s ministry reputation when someone who knows social media happened upon her indiscretion at Applebee’s. Google it. It went viral.
What It Is: Students in countries including Japan, Korea, France and Germany are looking for English speakers to practice with. Sessions focus on things like making professional small talk or running a meeting (trainers are provided with specifics on how to teach each topic, and are also trained themselves for two days before starting the job). Lessons take place either over the phone or on a live Internet video service like Skype — sometimes at night, because you're working with students in different time zones. You need to commit to a minimum of 20 hours a week at consistent times, and can work as many as 35 hours.
