Many moms avoid direct sales, also referred to as MLM or network marketing, out of fear of pyramid schemes or having to "sell." On the first point, while you need to research to find legitimate opportunities, direct sales is such a viable option, that you don't want the myths and misconceptions to keep you from considering it. Second, anything you do to make money requires "selling," whether it's selling yourself to an employer, getting someone to hire you as a freelancer, enticing customers to buy your products, etc.

Fiverr can work for you as both a seller and a buyer. It is a great way to make money and also you can find millions of services. Best $5 I've ever spent was using a Resume Revision service and now I receive way more employer call backs now after the revisions. If you want to know which service I used, leave a comment below. If you want to try Fiverr, sign up through here for 20% off your first order at Fiverr.

Why it's cool: Don't be fooled by the entrance to The Last Word. If you can get past the hammers and rakes, you'll find a 1920s-inspired speakeasy. The bar is filled with antique leather couches and huge red velvet curtains. Though there's no sign of the bar's name anywhere on the outside, it's slyly etched into ice cubes and branded on orange peels.
The City of New York clearly states that “Operating a business from home may be legal,” but there are some caveats. As emphasized, “Generally, your home occupation (defined by Zoning Resolution §12-10) can’t occupy more than 25% of the residence—up to 500 square feet—and no employees may work on-site.” The one exception is anyone with a “live/work” unit, but such units are now far and few in between. Chances are that if you rent or own anywhere in the five boroughs, you’re in a residentially zoned building, and you’ll be subject to the 25% rule. To confirm, visit NYC Planning and type your current address into the search engine at the bottom of the page.
If you don’t mind parading yourself around in public places as a side business idea, and enjoy a little attention, then working as a human billboard can pay a surprising amount of dividends. Renting out your beard, for example can earn you as much as $5 a day while having a brand logo tattooed on your shaven head for five years could pay as much as $7,000—though this type of earning opportunity is admittedly rare. This business idea is definitely not for the faint of heart, and is a little extreme for me, but nonetheless it's been done as a side hustle for many people. You can start by holding a placard or wearing a sandwich board. If you think this is a good side business idea, you can go all the way and turn it into a full on small business idea with enough hard work—plus you won't have to deal with all the issues other more complex businesses have to constantly think about (like reducing churn).
The real estate market is on the rebound (for today) and people are buying and selling properties in many locations across the U.S. That means a lot of opportunities for professionals who know how to navigate the legal, financial, and commercial aspect of real estate to build up a stable of clients as a side business idea, especially if you begin to scale your sales hiring and build a team of reps working to help you close more deals. If you consider yourself an expert in the subject, it won't be a walk in the park (hehe), but you can earn significant additional side income as a home-based real estate consultant—especially if you employ one of the best CRMs for small business and know how to work magic over the phone.
If you know how to make jewelry, there’s really no reason not to sell it. Handmade jewelry has long held appeal for collectors and admirers alike. The biggest challenge to setting up a jewelry business might be running the business itself—just making beautiful things won’t be enough to sustain the operation. Study up on what it takes to run a jewelry business and then make it happen. A great place to start is online with sites like Etsy and eBay
If your business is very small, running it as a sole proprietorship may be the only economically viable option. Keep in mind, however, that as a sole proprietor, you are personally responsible for every aspect of the business – from paying taxes to absorbing the risks of a lawsuit if your food products cause illness or injury to a customer. If you operate as a sole proprietor, you should purchase liability insurance to protect your personal assets (see below).
Do you have impeccable organizational skills? What about cleaning skills? Can you quickly and efficiently carry out these tasks? Maybe it's time to put those skills to good use by becoming an online personal assistant or task manager. Companies like TaskRabbit or Zirtual allow you to sign up for tasks you want to complete — including data research, virtual assistant or running errands — and begin building clientele.

Even if the type of food you hope to produce is on the approved list, however, you’ll need to apply for a “Home Processor” license with the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, and that’s just the beginning. If you plan to wholesale your products, you’ll also need to complete the Wholesale Business Registration and obtain a Food Protection Certificate and Sales Tax Vendor Registration (Certificate of Authority). If you’re preparing food at home, you’ll also need to ensure that all your equipment, storage and waste removal facilities are in tip-top shape, since home food preparation businesses are subject to regular inspections. Finally, bear in mind that if you’re operating a home food-preparation business, you’ll want to purchase additional insurance since your home insurance may not apply.

Starting an Etsy shop is completely free, and they provide tons of support and training for sellers. This includes an online marketing training course that even covers the basics of SEO.  An Etsy store can be started as a part-time business, and then become your full-time gig when you're earning enough from it. The top sellers on the platform often sell over 1,000 items from their store every day. Yup, that’s 1,000 items every single day.

You may have dreamed of owning your own store when you were younger, only to find out later how difficult it is to actually run a brick and mortar store these days. The good news is, you can sell just about anything online. There are plenty of ecommerce solutions online for you to sell your wares, as well as the classic standbys of eBay and Etsy. The trick for selling products online is to make sure to specialize in a certain industry, for instance – secondhand clothing, discounted brand names, vintage finds, housewares, books, geek-related products, art, etc. The options are virtually endless.
Financial planning requires a bit more intense paperwork than the other types. Financial planners seek out opportunities for investments and tax rules that may be beneficial to clients. They fill out forms and applications to get feet in the door with savings plans and investment packages to the clients save for a future or manage their current money.
If you have authentic information to share and something that’s not just regurgitated information, then you’ll gain people’s respect and confidence. Build a marketing funnel, send some Facebook traffic to a lead capture page, and sell information products. This is all possible when you email market the right way. Once you get people hooked on what you’re selling them, you will begin to see an influx of forever clients or returning customers.
Every business needs at least a basic website to succeed, but many business owners don’t know how to set one up for themselves. So, if you’re an IT and design wizard, you’ll have endless opportunities to custom-build websites. Use a platform like Upwork or Envato to gain your first clients, then use your portfolio and word-of-mouth recommendations to grow your client base (and eventually boost your prices).
A large proportion of homeowners and small businesses have lawns to tend to. Many turn to independent providers of yard work services to take care of their lawn care woes. To start and sustain a yard work services side business idea, you need training, equipment, and a growing network of customers. In the U.S., a full-time landscaping and groundskeeping worker reportedly earns a median wage of around $25,000, while those working on this as a side business idea largely during evenings and weekends can expect to make substantially less.
Obviously some of these small business ideas have more earning potential than others, but what they all share in common are relatively low barriers to entry and the flexibility to work at them for a limited amount of time per week. I also tried to focus on side business ideas that have some sort of online component to them, since that's what I love most.

Food production from a home is heavily regulated but it’s not impossible. Take Martha Stewart, for example—she famously entered the food service business with a basement-based catering company in 1976. Before you start a home-based food business you will need to understand the rules and regulations that govern the production of food for public consumption in an at-home environment. For example do you need a separate kitchen? What about product labeling? And so on.
What kind of skills do you have that you could leverage into sales? Think about products you could create yourself, preferably at low cost. The longer it takes to make them by hand, generally the more you can charge for them. A few ideas include sewing toys or clothes, baking and decorating fancy cakes, paintings or other artwork, or wedding favours.

Bookscouter will give you Amazon.com's trade in value, where you mail Amazon the book and get a gift card, they will not give you the used selling price because it's hard to compare apples to oranges. You may be able to get more for your book by selling it as a used book on Amazon, so be sure to double check that price. As an example, the trade in value of a book I looked up was $7.87 but used copies were on sale for $19.87.

“So thankful for the family that this company has become. When things get hard, personally, I realize I’ve started turning to my wine family first. There is such a deep bond that forms through the amazing experiences we have been given. This opportunity has changed my family’s life and we will never be the same. Traveling Vineyard for life!” – Elizabeth Allen, Emerald Director

Find items that you know are selling below their full value (either online or through a deal website like SlickDeals.net), discount stores (Marshalls, Ross, etc.) buy them and sell them for more on eBay or Amazon. Once you find your product niche you can set up a system. Don't read over that too quickly. You need to find a particular product or niche to really make this work. Otherwise, you're met with different shipping costs, always trying to figure out new margins, etc. Don't try to be everything to everybody. Try to be good in one particular. Maybe it's a product you're passionate about such as selling trucker hats.  🙂 Click here for more on this idea.

Multi-Level Marketing (MLM): A distribution and compensation method of direct selling where individuals sell products to the public and receive compensation for recruiting new salespeople to act as a team under them. MLM is typically an optional aspect of many direct selling businesses and designed for those who have an interest in team building, team nurturing and training.

In July 2001, Jodi Echakowitz launched Echo Communications, a boutique PR agency focused on the tech sector, with clients including BlackBerry Partners Fund, Hitachi Data Systems, and LinkedIn. Based in Toronto, Echakowitz employs a team of nine public relations consultants, all of whom work virtually. Her decision to take this approach was based on a few factors, including reducing the overhead expenses of a rented office space, making services more affordable for clients, and the ability to start the business with less capital costs. It's also a family decision, she says. "My son has Aspeger's Syndrome," says Echakowitz, who's originally from South Africa, "and given the amount of time he requires to support him in his day-to-day life, working from home made it that much easier as we live close to his school."

Speak a second language? Know a musical instrument? You can make money online with just your laptop and an internet connection. Use Skype or Zoom or Google Hangouts to teach to one or more people at the same time. You could also become a virtual assistant, especially if you're highly organized and are great at completing tasks and being time effecient.
Make sure you are buying items that are highly sellable, meaning that you there is a large market so you won’t have to wait years to find a buyer. And be disciplined enough only to buy items that allow you plenty of markup for resale. Specialization, or at least having most of your products fit your specialization, is highly likely to increase your chances of success.
If you can write copy that gets people excited about purchasing what your client has to sell, you can make good money in this business. Unless you are highly experienced from working in the copywriting field, take a course. There are online courses or classes at community colleges and universities that can give you a leg up in getting savvy at writing copy for brochures, catalogs, advertising and, of course, marketing copy for the web.

The only thing better than the smell of grandma’s chocolate-chip cookie recipe baking in the oven is watching cash roll in as customers order those delectable treats. Home baking is an approachable business idea in that it involves doing what you’re probably doing a lot of, anyway, if you love to bake. You probably have all the equipment and expertise you need to get started.
It's simple to use: A guest finds accommodations based on their location, and once they send a request, the host has 10 minutes to respond — if they don't, the next available rental is shown. Guests are able to pay within the app, and all of the hosts are verified by Overnight. The rates are pretty cheap, too — private rooms can go for $70 to $80, and houses can go for $150.

During my long search for an online business, I found a network marketing company that’s just about to do its public launch. It was set up specifically to run online. In this way, you can contact only the seemingly endless supply people that have already shown interest. You don’t have to worry about those dreaded headaches of old-style network marketing. Because it’s built into the process members are freely interact, communicating and supporting each other openly online without asking whose team they are on. With the network marketing business model and the vast market on the internet, I think that a lot more people will find this option appealing.
A home-based business requires someone who is willing to work and persevere through trying times. Small home businesses can take a while to get off the ground, and without a lot of padding in your teeny-tiny corporate budget, you’ll feel the discomfort of the lean months. If you’re not willing to push forward, you won’t last long enough to come out the other side.
As the saying goes, one person’s trash is another’s treasure. Without people cleaning up everybody else’s junk, the world would be a lot messier than it already is. This business idea might not be glamorous, but you get to make the world a cleaner place while earning extra side income. To start, you’ll likely need a sturdy second-hand truck and standard equipment like shovels, wheelbarrows, sledgehammers, rakes, and garbage cans to launch the foundation of this side business idea.
If you have a knack for a certain subject and live near a college, consider offering up your brain power and teaching skills for some quick cash. Grade school kids need help too, and parents pay better than college students. You can take this idea to the next level and scale by tutoring online. We have an interview post dedicated to a chemistry tutor who took his skills to Tutor.com.  To be successful, you have to have a good grasp of the concepts but also be able to find a way to relate topics using real-world examples.

One way to make money in this field is by being an expert witness yourself. If you have an expertise that could be useful in legal cases, you can market yourself to attorneys to act as an expert witness. Another way to be active in the expert witness field is to play a sort of matchmaker, matching attorneys up with expert witnesses for their cases--either for the defense or for the prosecution. Expert witnesses for big money cases can be expected to fly anywhere to testify. There's no reason your database of witnesses can't be from all parts of the country.

If you’re the most organized person your know, your best small business idea from home just might be a freelance virtual assistant service: You might be surprised by how many companies are increasingly outsourcing administrative tasks to remote workers. As a virtual assistant, you can choose your clients, then manage their emails, schedule meetings, book travel, and complete other essential tasks to make your clients’ lives and businesses run more smoothly—all from the comfort of your own home. In a nutshell, you find a product, purchase the product and get it to Amazon. You then write copy or hire a copywriter to write your product description and get reviews on your product as fast as possible. Amazon is an authority site for online shopping. They’re recognized throughout the world and are a selling machine. With Amazon’s massive customer base, getting your items sold is a done deal when you know how to play your cards right.

How to Get It: You can apply directly through companies, such as Stella & Dot, a jewelry company that had over $100 million in sales in 2010, who is always in need of stylists. A few others include Avon (household and personal care), The Cocoa Exchange (chocolates and more), and Alice's Table (flowers). You can also visit the Direct Selling Association website — all the companies listed there agree to abide by a code of ethics, so they only offer legitimate opportunities. Typically reps make a small investment to get started (this is a legitimate and standard practice), and sometimes pay a fee for the merchandise being sold. After that you can work as much or as little as you want, and see profit based on how much you sell.
