If you have a knack for a certain subject and live near a college, consider offering up your brain power and teaching skills for some quick cash. Grade school kids need help too, and parents pay better than college students. You can take this idea to the next level and scale by tutoring online. We have an interview post dedicated to a chemistry tutor who took his skills to Tutor.com. To be successful, you have to have a good grasp of the concepts but also be able to find a way to relate topics using real-world examples.
Though too many recruitment agencies are already there, and the presence of web portals make it quite a saturated market, there’s still a huge gap that needs to be filled. Specialized recruitment companies are very less as they offer their services for a very limited set of industries. Get hold of two or three relevant industries and set up your unique presence with a better value delivery.
Of course, FlexJobs is not the only site for finding remote work and jobs you can do from home. Upwork is the largest marketplace for freelancers in the world, with demand for nearly any remote-friendly skill set. Then there are the niche sites, like We Work Remotely, where the majority of job posters are early stage startups looking for talented engineers. Still, FlexJobs may be the winner: its robust, easy-to-navigate system offers tens of thousands of jobs from thousands of employers at any one time. If you’re serious about finding remote work you can do from home or on the road, there’s no better place to look.

Melissa Dowler and her husband Tom run Long Haul Films, a production company that makes documentaries and bespoke films for weddings, events and corporate clients. The couple's workload is split between shoot days when they're on location and editing and administration days when they're handling post-production or working on marketing. So why stay at home? "Every saved penny counts and we made the decision to create a great at-home working environment so we weren't spending our money on office or co-working space," Melissa Dowler says. "We're lucky to live in a spacious loft that is ideal for what we do." Dowler explains that the loft is a former photographer's studio so there's plenty of space and light to conduct shoots right on site when needed. "Many people warned us that we'd struggle as a husband and wife team working from home, but we each feel we have our own space and we love that we're able to collaborate closely on projects and also take breaks together for lunch or the gym," she says.
Finding a niche is the best way to start out in the gift basket business. Are you a dog lover, horse lover, or exercise guru who could put together baskets that hold the things that people with this interest would like? Do you already create a product that a gift basket could be built around? Have you made your own soaps for the past 10 years? A gift basket that included one or two of your soaps, hand lotion, a scrub brush and manicure kit could be a lovely basket to receive.
People are always searching for one-of-a-kind venues for meetings, parties and weddings. Why not earn some extra money off the space you already have by renting it out for events as a side business idea? If you own a unique venue, like a studio, warehouse or boat, UK-based company Tagvenue will connect you with clients looking for somewhere special to host their event. Not a bad low-effort side business idea.
When I first started working from home 15 years ago, I had never heard the acronym WAHM (work-at-home mom). The landscape has certainly changed; now, instead of "Work versus staying home?" the question for moms-to-be is often "What work can I do from home?" Brooke Hall, who runs a Web design business (brookehalldesign.com) and stays home with her 10-month-old son, Owen, is happy doing both. "I get to be here for the first giggle and step, and yet working from home gives me an identity other than ‘mom,'" says the 27-year-old from Dublin, California. "I'm still the same person I was before the baby—partly due to my continuing professional life."
