Find items that you know are selling below their full value (either online or through a deal website like SlickDeals.net), discount stores (Marshalls, Ross, etc.) buy them and sell them for more on eBay or Amazon. Once you find your product niche you can set up a system. Don't read over that too quickly. You need to find a particular product or niche to really make this work. Otherwise, you're met with different shipping costs, always trying to figure out new margins, etc. Don't try to be everything to everybody. Try to be good in one particular. Maybe it's a product you're passionate about such as selling trucker hats.  🙂 Click here for more on this idea.

Fundrise allows individuals to invest in commercial real estate online through an eREIT (Real Estate Investment Trust). Their crowdsourcing model sets them apart from a traditional REIT allowing the average investor to participate in deals for as little as $500. The interesting thing about Fundrise is that it lets investors buy into private commercial and residential properties by pcooling their assets through an investment platform. Since the eREIT is sold directly to investors cutting out middle-men, they can have fees lower than 90% of the competition. Here are some quick facts about Fundrise:
It's a little more involved. Companies, especially those with stores, will want to get the opinion of the customer as they go through a transaction. For a bank, it might be opening up an account. For a retail clothing store, it might be trying on a shirt and checking out. Sometimes it's just calling up their customer service line with a problem and seeing how the representative treats you.

Investing in Real Estate has been a wildly popular pursuit for millions of individuals across the nation. The semi-recent housing crisis of 2008 resulted in innumerable properties for sale at pennies on the dollar. Small business entrepreneurs and a plethora of savvy individuals snapped up these low-cost properties and effortlessly flipped them for a sizeable profit.

According to the National Association for College Admission Counseling, only 28% of public schools employ at least one college counselor. And yet, the process of studying for entrance exams, completing college applications, and navigating the financial process is complex. If you’re organized, knowledgeable about the higher education process, and enjoy working with adolescents and their parents, consider starting a side business as an independent college application consultant to help more smart, ambitious, and qualified kids get into the schools of their dreams.
@Philip Taylor The point is that this is design is specialized job and is not just a side job. Just because an individual may know a thing or two about the technical aspect of a program does not warrant them to fill that role as a designer. There’s more than just drawing a mark in a program. There’s strategy in brand development, marketing, etc… This is insulting to the creative industry to label logo and branding as a scheme to make extra money.

Still, knowing something about how the flower business works is a good idea, and your online presence and photos of your work will be critical to your success. Remember, the business is all about visuals, so make yours as compelling as you can. Get started networking by contacting local wedding planners and funeral homes and letting them know you’re in business. From there, let your business bloom. A friend in Maine turned a flower-arranging business into a successful flower shop she later sold at a profit.

If you have something you're skilled at and very passionate about, you can turn that winning combination into offering your services with one-on-one online coaching as a solid side business idea. Just be sure to implement your own opportunity management system so you don't get caught up working with clients that you can't measurably help. Elmira Strange will give you a step-by-step plan for putting your skills and experience to work by developing an online coaching business—even as a side business idea in the time around your full-time job—so be sure to check out her course on Udemy for a jump start on this side business idea.

Technology can help organize your finances (like Intuit QuickBooks Self-Employed does), and it can even help you make money. For example, if you’re a contractor, using the Task Rabbit app can help you find nearby gigs. If you have a family dog that you take on daily walks, you can make money by using apps like Wag. These examples are also a terrific way to meet new people while making money.
While managing a blog in and of itself won’t net you any money—in fact, it’ll cost you to purchase a domain, upgrade the appearance, and run marketing campaigns—there are a few ways for you to monetize your blog. You could offer up advertising space, which is a useful but typically minor revenue stream, but a lot more money is often found in sponsorships and affiliate marketing.

Content is what drives web traffic. Websites are always pumping out fresh, new content for their readers, and they are always looking for writers! If you aren’t quite ready to launch your own blog yet, this might be a good option to see if writing is for you. Since competition is high, we don’t recommend starting from scratch as a freelance writer. Want to see success faster? Learn from a veteran, six-figure freelance writer.
Trim boasts that new users are eligible for up to $30 in cash-back deals as soon as they sign up. The free app, Trim, saves you money with automation and within a few days, I saved an extra $100 within the first few days.  I simply linked my accounts and Trim went to work. It found ways to lower my bills and cancel subscriptions, analyzed my spending habits, and more. The app is free and worth the 1-minute download as it can potentially save you hundreds. More people should be using this app.
Do you love woodworking? Even without a huge workshop, you can create some of the more popular crafts and sell them.  And like most things, your success in business isn’t necessarily related to how skilled you are as a woodworker. So if you can figure out which products consumers want and just create those, you could have a good business plan.  Etsy.com and farmers’ markets are a great place to start selling.
In my pre-kid life, I never imagined that someday I'd be a stay-at-home mom—hey, I didn't go to grad school to spend my days changing diapers. But when I held my first baby, Mathilda, I had a complete change of heart. As soon as we locked eyes, all those career and financial worries faded. They didn't disappear, but they certainly became secondary.
Businesses always need graphic designers to help them convey information visually, through logos, advertisements, posters, websites, and the like. While it is possible to be an entirely self-taught graphic designer, most have either a certification or a degree. Other than the cost of design software, this business has very little overhead and can be done anywhere with a dedicated computer. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, graphic designers have a median salary of $45,000.*
One should think about their skills, hobbies and basic daily habits as well. Do you like to cook? Be a personal cook or dinner parties. Baking? Make wedding cakes or cupcakes for weddings/special events. Do you enjoy cleaning? Trying going to banks/repo companies and ask if they are in need of a repo cleaner or market yourself as a all-around cleaner. Know how to mow a lawn? Get paid to do it in your neighborhood. Sell products from large companies – Jewelry in a candle, Sentsy, Health and home products – etc.
Many small companies and startups now outsource jobs that aren’t part of their core business (such as HR, admin, and accounting), which makes this skill set a great opportunity for starting a side business idea that engages your number prowess. Because companies always need to track their cash flow, freelance accountants and bookkeepers can really benefit from the increasing demand for part-time help.
@Philip Taylor So by what you’re saying, I can be an unaccredited doctor or surgeon for someone (for example) but do it at a much lower rate than the accredited doctors and surgeons. Since I know what a scalpel is and I wear rubber gloves, I’m a doctor. So, I don’t have to have to respect the profession of medical science at all since I think I know what I’m doing and just go for it.

Two hundred years ago, farming was common, even in Manhattan. Today, if you want to engage in any type of agricultural activity, you are better off moving upstate, but there are a few micro-agricultural businesses that one can operate legally within the five boroughs. Under most circumstances, growing microgreens on your rooftop and selling them at a local farmer’s market is legal, so long as you have ensured that your roof top garden complies with local building code regulations. While once illegal, home apiaries got the green light back in 2010 and are now flourishing city wide, but don’t forget to register your beehive. Unregistered hives are subject to steep fines (for more about urban beekeeping, read 6sqft’s earlier post).
An energy consultant is an independent salesperson that helps businesses convert their source of electricity to competitive retail energy suppliers to save money. Energy consultants can earn sizable commissions per deal while helping business switch their energy to competitive energy suppliers. It only requires a few hours a day and stay-at-home moms can do this while watching over the kids.

@dasjung It sounds like you paid a lot for your education, as did I. But you got to face it, today’s technology allows the average Joe to accomplish a comparable logo with much less effort than you or I could put into it, and the savings outweighs the extra benefit of our knowledge. We, as designers, have been out done. It is time to go back to school, unfortunately…
Before you start a home-based food business in New York, you need to consider some basic legal issues. For example, you must know which foods you are allowed to prepare in your home kitchen and how to choose a business structure, apply for permits and licenses, learn about food safety, and obtain insurance. If you want to hire employees, you need to know the rules about that, too.
While I think that your initial response to Phillip’s suggestion about design was a little too strong, Dasjung, I’ve got to chime in here and observe that Phil, ThunderCock and Dumbass, by resorting to name calling and simplistic reasoning, come across as very lacking in both decorum and sensitivity.  If a guy wants to expect, even demand, high quality in his field of choice, I beleive he has a right, if not a responsibility, to do so!  Also, Dumbass, be careful who you call Dumbass. You just show YOUR true colors by doing so.
The antique market is not as lively as it used to be. But there’s still money to be had from the industry if you love rare old stuff and possess the skill of restoring them to their former glory. To start an antique refurbishing business at home, you’ll likely need a few thousand dollars to build out a basic workshop and stock it with all of the right treatments and materials in order to truly excel with this side business idea. Start small by borrowing around what you can, and learning the basics of the trade as a side hustle before investing in a ton of equipment.
Every business needs at least a basic website to succeed, but many business owners don’t know how to set one up for themselves. So, if you’re an IT and design wizard, you’ll have endless opportunities to custom-build websites. Use a platform like Upwork or Envato to gain your first clients, then use your portfolio and word-of-mouth recommendations to grow your client base (and eventually boost your prices).
Before you get excited about starting your home based business idea, you first have to make sure you have the right tools in place. The main tool is a speedy Internet connection. Most home-based businesses will require some sort of Internet connection. With a good Internet connection, you can also take care of a phone and fax. Isn’t technology great?
Fortunately, baby boomers are a wealthy demographic compared to previous generations. For the most part, they can afford to pay for the services necessary to maintain their lifestyles. This includes continuing to live at home in their own communities. According to research by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), nearly 90 percent of seniors have this goal.
Of course, starting a small business is no small endeavor. It takes commitment and hard work. If you want to stick to it, your best bet is finding a way to work your passions into your business ideas. Luckily, as a parent you have plenty of practice; you know you can do it. So what else do you need for a successful business? Passion. If you don’t feel passionate about what you are doing, you won’t have that certain fire that drives all successful businesses.
Federal Direct Tax Services: Don't handcuff your new tax business with costly tax franchise fees, restrictions and rules that don't allow you the freedom to customize your tax office for the best results in your specific market. Don't enter into tax franchise contracts that lock your income tax business in for many years to come. Put Federal Direct's income tax office support and growth structure to work for your start up tax business this tax season!

Once you’ve confirmed whether you can use all or only up to 25% of your home for business purposes, you’ll need to confirm that your proposed business is in compliance, and this is where things get complicated. If you’re a freelance writer, editor, or web designer, you don’t need to worry. If you’re starting a bakery, daycare, dog boarding service, or chicken farm, you’ll need to do a bit more research. To demonstrate, consider just of few common home businesses scenarios.

Right now on Upwork, they are looking for more writers. Do you have a way with words? Copywriting is the process of using persuasive words to promote a person, product, business, idea or opinion. Copywriters write the words in TV commercials, radio ads, magazines, newspapers, billboards, flyers, websites, and direct mailings – wherever something is being sold, copywriters are hard at work writing alluring and compelling advertisements.
In the U.S., ecommerce spending totalled $97.3 billion in the second quarter of 2016 alone, an increase of 4.5 percent from the first quarter of 2016 (U.S. Census Bureau News). Online sales in the United States are expected to reach $523 billion in the next five years, up 56% from $335 billion in 2015, Forrester Research Inc. says. Canadian companies sold more than $136 billion in goods and services online in 2013, up from $122 billion a year earlier, according to Statistics Canada. Obviously more people than ever are shopping online.

Perhaps you're interested in measuring America. “Census Bureau Regional Offices conduct continuous surveys–other than the once-a-decade population count–to supply the nation with important statistics on people, places and our economy.” The US Census website states that the local field workers understand their communities best and are an important part of conducting surveys with residents. You get to work out of your home and you're also reimbursed for your mileage. The Census Bureau is hiring across the United States and you can search temporary field positions here.
They are generally solopreneurs who offer their services to small businesses who need help with a given range of tasks. Some people might argue that being a virtual assistant isn't really running a business. But somebody like Gina Horkey can prove that's simply not true, and she has a booming business to back her claims up. She's also seen as the “go to” person for a step-by-step guide to running your own VA business.

Nassau County, Mid-Hudson Valley booming. Three towns on the top 10 list are in Nassau County, east of New York City on Long Island. Nassau is home to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory for bio-innovation, the Advanced Material and Manufacturing Technology Innovation Center for composite prototyping and Hauppauge Industrial Park. Four communities in the top 10 are in the Hudson Valley, which is the site of dozens of biotech companies and the Hudson Valley Research Park.
A spinoff of the Homeowner Referral Network (HRN) business model, Aging in Place Referrals is a profitable and rewarding home based business! Sell Promotional Products From Home. Many direct sales companies have the appeal of also being home business opportunities. And it’s no wonder why – you experience a sense of freedom no other company could provide when you work from home. It’s important, however, to make sure you partner with a direct sales company that is reputable and trustworthy.

This is a great time for a concierge business or errand business startup. In many areas where there is significant development in the luxury market (residential and commercial), you will find increasing opportunity for concierge service providers. I remember my first job as a residential concierge, which helped me start a concierge business from home. The knowledge I acquired while employed by an established concierge business set the groundwork for my long-term career as a concierge business entrepreneur and author.
One of the easiest ways to incorporate motherhood into making money is by offering childcare. Not only can you care for your own children, but for other children as well. While you don't necessarily need to be licensed, getting a license can increase your appeal to parents, which, in turn, can lead to your charging more. Further, some states have food programs whereby you can get additional funds to help feed the children in your care.
Thinking of starting up"”but don't want the daily trek to an office? Home-based businesses, or virtual businesses, provide plenty of advantages, especially if you're looking to bootstrap your operation. Here's a look at 11 entrepreneurs that ditched the office to cut overhead expenses, be closer to family, and enjoy, as one entrepreneur put it, the "10-step commute."
In direct marketing and sales, it’s a matter of hosting your first event and promoting it. Having a company behind you generally makes working from home easier, as there’s an automatic, built-in community to support you. At Traveling Vineyard, new Wine Guides are automatically eligible for a Fast Start incentive program that’s designed specifically to help new entrepreneurs establish momentum from the start.

Professionals from all the industries are looking for smart ways to meet their professional demands and increase overall productivity while making their personal lives more comfortable, peaceful and full of entertainment.

The only thing better than the smell of grandma’s chocolate-chip cookie recipe baking in the oven is watching cash roll in as customers order those delectable treats. Home baking is an approachable business idea in that it involves doing what you’re probably doing a lot of, anyway, if you love to bake. You probably have all the equipment and expertise you need to get started.
Know people looking for work? Help everyone out by starting a nanny service. Use a website and local marketing to help generate leads to find both potential nannies or babysitters and families looking for one. To ensure success, you’ll need to make sure you carefully examine your nannies backgrounds and resumes. A good place to start for more information if you’re considering this business is the International Nanny Association.
Professional businesses – Notary public, travel agent, aesthetician, hairdresser, massage therapist, bookkeeper, business coaches, writers, travel agents; surely, you can think of another profession to add to this list. If your profession involves meeting with clients in your home, you’ll want to read these tips for making your home business as client-friendly as possible.
If your hobby isn’t centered on creating tangible things, you can use your talents to offer a service. Perhaps you’re always offering advice to friends and family, or maybe you love helping people. You can set up shop as a consultant in whatever field you love and are trained for, anything from freelance creativity to financial consultation to childcare. Whatever the case, you can use your skills to earn more money on the side, or launch a full-time career working from home.
Take the time to develop your skills at either making your own music, or becoming a pro at mixing, and your side business idea of dj-ing local events could turn into a much bigger endeavor. Though you'll first need to command a solid knowledge of sound design, mixing and music production before expecting to land your first gig with this business idea, as developing an entirely new skill set is not for the faint of heart.

Rielle gets it. She's one of the fifty college students I interviewed for my book, How to Become a Straight-A Student. Like the rest of my subjects, Rielle was a straight-A student at a demanding university (Brown) who made top academic performance seem effortless: no all-nighters; no crippling stress; just a happy, social undergrad with stellar grades. "We like to think that good grades and other accomplishments are directly proportional..
If you’re just looking for a quick way to make cash on nights or weekends for a short stretch of time, then maybe this one isn’t for you. But if you’re ready to turn your dream of starting your own business into a reality, there’s never been a better time to do it! Online platforms like Etsy, Amazon FBA and Big Cartel have made it easier than ever.
Like the others, this particular home-based business idea for moms has its unique drawbacks. You’re responsible for your own promotion, for recruiting a team, and for making sure the product is sold as quickly as possible. Many of these companies require that you purchase and carry stock, which can be an expensive upfront cost. Be careful to fully investigate any company to make sure there are no surprises: There’s a big difference between marketing with a company (which doesn’t require you to buy and carry stock) and selling with a company (which means you have to purchase products for future sales).
If you’ve been in the business world for a long time, folks might be clamoring for your knowledge and expertise within your industry. Why not turn all that know-how into a new career as an independent consultant? You can get paid to speak at industry conferences or events, serve on a board of advisors for a fledgling business, or lend your expertise to shape the strategy of an existing business on a contract basis.
The stuff you can't sell online, you could sell from your garage on the weekends. Many neighborhoods plan annual or bi-annual yard sales. If you have items to sell, this is a great time to do it as the neighborhood as a whole can bring in a lot of traffic and help you perform better than you would on your own. If that's not possible, consider partnering up with a couple of families in a popular neighborhood.
In reality, Facebook advertising puts money into a system over which you have a limited amount of control. Be sure you do your research on the profession beforehand. Others' experience shows you can make a lot of money this way if you understand the market. In 2014, former pastor Nicholas Kusmich and his wife capitalized on the emerging market for Facebook advertising. The couple opened a boutique Facebook marketing agency that brought in around $2 million in 2017.

It used to be that if you had a product to sell, you also had to have a storefront and all the costs associated with it. These days, you can sell anything to anyone anywhere in the world. Whether you’re marketing the organic honey from your backyard apiary or selling personalized linens that you embroider yourself, you can find a market for your products online.

Bloggers are typically people who enjoy a particular topic and enjoy writing about it on a semi-regular to regular basis. If you have something you are passionate about, or are an expert in a particular area, you can consider starting a blog. Blogs are a great way to: teach people about a particular skill, entertain, or share about life experiences.

If you have the gift of gab, public speaking is a worthwhile side business idea for you to pursue. Many authors, medical practitioners, scientists, artisans, politicians, and other subject matter experts earn extra income by delivering speeches, seminars, and presentations. Professional motivational speakers earn an average annual salary of around $90,000 with just that portion of their income, making this a very realistic side business idea while you continue practicing your craft.

Paribus connects to your email account and checks your receipts.  If they find out a retailer has dropped their price they file a price adjustment claim for you.  Try out Paribus.
Modern self-storage requires a climate-controlled environment, lighting, and security. Initial capital costs for land and building construction are high but can be easily financed from rental income assuming there is a steady demand for storage space in your area - making your business plan attractive to banks and other potential investors, a great legup when you're starting a new business.
Perhaps most importantly, though, would-be eBay moguls need to specialize. Just throwing junk online won’t work. Sellers need to know what they want to sell and how they’re going to market it to their audiences. Again, competition is fierce, so research, preparation and strategy are critical. (For reference, eBay itself provides an extensive guide to selling on the site.)

And freelance coder is an especially great one, since it’s already such a commonplace gig. Whether you want the flexibility of being your own boss, enjoy taking on a wide diversity of projects rather than working with a single company, or prefer to travel instead of staying in one place, you’ve got many reasons to pursue freelance software development—even though technology companies and startups offer their own perks as well.
